Frozen Frenzy Betting: The Big Winners and Big Losers From the NHL's Biggest Board

4 min read

Sixteen games, 32 teams and the busiest betting board of the NHL regular season. Six underdogs cashed outright, four favorites covered the puck line with room to spare, and a couple of the most popular player props went cold. Here's who walked away with the money — and who handed it back.

A note on the numbers: odds below are the DraftKings Sportsbook lines published Tuesday morning in ESPN's Frozen Frenzy betting guide. Lines move, and sportsbooks don't publish individual bettor results, so the dollar figures are what a hypothetical $100 bet at those prices would have paid.

BIG WINNERS

1. Anyone who rode the six live dogs

Florida (+105), Seattle (+102), the Rangers (+136), St. Louis (even), Chicago (+120) and Calgary (+170) all won outright. A $100 six-team moneyline parlay on those dogs would have returned about $11,610. The best single-game payout came from the Flames, who entered 0-5 with the worst goals-against average in the league and won anyway: $100 to collect $270.

2. Puck-line players who trusted the heavyweights

Four teams won by three or more as favorites: Winnipeg (-1.5 at +225), Vegas (+200), Edmonton (+200) and Boston (+225). Each paid more than double on its own; a $100 four-leg puck-line parlay would have returned about $9,506. Connor McDavid's four-point night in his 800th game did most of the heavy lifting in L.A.

3. Kent Johnson anytime-goal backers (+290)

ESPN's pregame pick on the Blue Jackets winger hit inside the first period — Johnson opened the scoring against a tired Florida backup. $100 paid $290 in profit.

4. The Morgan Geekie assist (+175)

The "for extra fun" add-on in ESPN's Bruins write-up came through: Geekie picked up two assists in Boston's 6-3 win, including the setup on Pavel Zacha's buzzer-beater. $100 to win $175.

5. Kraken backers and Under bettors in Philly

Seattle at +102 was one of the cleaner value reads on the board — a winless home favorite against a road team that scores — and it cashed, along with the Under 5.5 (+110), via a five-round shootout. Bobby McMann bettors had a great night, too: he scored in regulation and won the shootout.

6. Over bettors in the early window

Detroit-New Jersey (nine goals), Florida-Columbus (ten) and Montreal-Buffalo (seven with the shootout goal) all went over 6.5. Throw in nine goals in Ottawa, Utah and San Jose, and Over players had a very good night.

BIG LOSERS

1. Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh backers

The Lightning were one of the night's bigger road favorites (-162) and the subject of a -1.5 recommendation. They managed one goal at MSG against a backup goalie. Pittsburgh at -142 (and -1.5 at +180 as a pregame pick) got two goals from Sidney Crosby and still lost to a Chicago team that was 1-5-0 an hour earlier — Bedard's early return flipped that number.

2. Ducks -1.5 and the Anaheim money line

Anaheim was the heaviest home favorite after the Islanders (-205) and was a popular puck-line play at +124. The Ducks lost by two.

3. The Evan Bouchard goal-scorer crowd

Bouchard was one of the most-touted props of the night — +295 in DraftKings Network's anytime-goalscorer picks and +310 in ESPN's guide — riding six goals in five games against a leaky Kings penalty kill. He had two assists and no goals. Close doesn't cash.

4. David Pastrnak anytime goal (+145)

The Bruins scored six and Pastrnak scored none of them. Fraser Minten (two), Charlie McAvoy, Matthew Poitras, Zacha and Will Borgen did.

5. Under bettors in Ottawa and Nashville

The Senators-Blues Under 5.5 (+102) looked smart on paper against a top-five defense. Nine goals later, it wasn't close. Vegas-Nashville Under 5.5 (+115) also crashed at seven.

6. The Islanders shutout dream (+700)

A fun price on Ilya Sorokin — but Vancouver scored twice. The Isles still won, so moneyline bettors were fine.

7. Taylor Hall point-scorer (+110)

The Hurricanes won, but Hall left with an upper-body injury after a heavy hit late in the first period. One of the night's tougher-luck losers.

The Dream Ticket

If you hit all 16 moneyline winners at Tuesday morning's prices, a $100 parlay would have paid out about $3.13 million. Nobody we know hit it. But that's the Frenzy: everything is on the board, and anything can happen.

Looking Ahead

Colorado and Dallas meet again Wednesday night in Denver after a game with a fight, a power-play winner and real bad blood. Expect that number to be tight again.
