The short version: Jack Hughes opened the night with another overtime winner, Brady Tkachuk wrote his name into the record book with a little help from his big brother, Connor Bedard came back early and won, Connor McDavid kept rewriting history, and by our count the league piled up 112 goals across eight hours of hockey. Goal count includes shootout-deciding goals, the way the NHL tallies single-day totals.

The American Headliners

Hughes does it again — Devils 5, Red Wings 4 (OT)

The man who scored the golden goal in Milan in February picked up right where he left off. Jack Hughes went in alone in overtime at Little Caesars Arena and ended a seesaw opener that featured nine goals and four lead changes. Hughes added two assists for a three-point night. Evan Rodrigues scored his first as a Devil to open the Frenzy, Nico Hischier and Jesper Bratt chipped in, and New Jersey outshot Detroit 16-3 in the first period.

On the other side, Alex DeBrincat scored twice, including a one-timer to tie it 4-4 — and a few hours later the Red Wings and DeBrincat agreed to a seven-year, $91 million extension. Not a bad Tuesday for him either.

The Tkachuk Show — Panthers 7, Blue Jackets 3

Brady Tkachuk hadn't scored in six games since arriving in Florida. Then he scored three times in the second period — a natural hat trick — and Matthew Tkachuk assisted on all three. According to NHL stats, Brady is the first player in league history to record a hat trick where his brother set up every goal. Both brothers finished with four points. Carter Verhaeghe scored twice and Sam Reinhart added one as the injury-depleted Panthers (no Barkov, no Marchand) found their game in a hurry. Kent Johnson opened the scoring for Columbus and Matthew Knies stayed hot with an assist.

McAvoy's back — Bruins 6, Sharks 3

The nightcap belonged to Boston. Charlie McAvoy, returning from a six-game suspension carried over from last spring, scored in his first game of the season. Fraser Minten scored twice, Pavel Zacha beat the second-intermission buzzer by three seconds, and Jeremy Swayman made 35 saves. San Jose's bright spot: No. 2 overall pick Ivar Stenberg scored his first NHL goal off a feed from Macklin Celebrini.

Return of the Stars

Bedard is back — Blackhawks 5, Penguins 3

Connor Bedard was supposed to miss four months after offseason shoulder surgery. He came back a month early, wore the "C" for the first time, and set up a power-play goal for his first point of the season. Chicago scored 20 seconds in, then needed a late push: after Sidney Crosby scored twice to keep Pittsburgh level, Teuvo Teräväinen netted his second of the night with 4:18 left to put Chicago ahead for good. Roman Kantserov also scored twice in his first career multi-goal game.

McDavid, again — Oilers 4, Kings 1

In his 800th NHL game, Connor McDavid had a goal and three assists and factored on all three first-period goals, including a gloved-down stretch pass turned into a backhand breakaway. He now has 1,237 points through 800 games — only Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux had more at that milestone. Vasily Podkolzin scored twice, Devon Levi made 39 saves, and Edmonton is 5-0-1. The Kings have lost five straight.

Rivalries and Grudges

Bad blood in Big D — Avalanche 3, Stars 2

The ESPN prime-time game felt like May. Nathan MacKinnon and Roope Hintz dropped the gloves in the second period, and MacKinnon came out of it bloodied. He also took a trip and a stick to the face later on — and the resulting power play produced Martin Necas's goal for a 3-1 lead. Necas scored twice, Hintz got one back, and Colorado held on without Cale Makar. These two meet again Wednesday night in Denver.

Before puck drop, a young cancer survivor rang the bell marking the end of her chemotherapy as Dallas hosted the season's first Hockey Fights Cancer night. Best moment of the night, no contest.

Playoff rematch at the Bell — Canadiens 4, Sabres 3 (SO)

The first meeting since last spring's seven-game second-round war lived up to it. Olen Zellweger scored twice for Buffalo, including the equalizer early in the third. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 35 saves, among them a robbery of Josh Anderson on a 2-on-0. Then Montreal went a perfect 3-for-3 in the shootout — Cole Caufield, Alexandre Texier and Zachary Bolduc, whose winner was his second shootout decider in as many games. Lane Hutson had a goal and an assist.

Ovi's last dance in Raleigh — Hurricanes 4, Capitals 2

Carolina — where Alex Ovechkin was drafted in 2004 — gave him a standing ovation during his final regular-season visit. Then the defending champs went back to business. Boone Jenner scored first for Washington, but Andrei Svechnikov answered twice, including the power-play winner late, and Mark Jankowski added insurance. That's six straight wins for Carolina. The cost: Taylor Hall left with an upper-body injury after a heavy hit.

Around the Rinks

Rangers 4, Lightning 1. Alexis Lafrenière scored 1:02 in, then again on a breakaway — he's the first player to seven goals this season. Matt Rempe dropped the gloves, Dylan Garand held firm in place of the injured Igor Shesterkin, and New York has already matched more than half of last season's home regulation win total.

Blues 7, Senators 2. Pius Suter (one shorthanded), Jake Neighbours and Mason McTavish each scored twice, Pavel Buchnevich had three assists and Adam Jiříček scored his first NHL goal. Ottawa's three-game win streak is over.

Islanders 3, Canucks 2. Kyle Palmieri scored his first two goals since tearing his ACL last November, including the third-period winner. Teen defenseman Matthew Schaefer had two assists, and Ilya Sorokin tied Glenn Resch for second in franchise wins. Vancouver has dropped five straight. That completed a clean Frenzy sweep for the three New York-area teams.

Kraken 3, Flyers 2 (SO). Philadelphia erased a two-goal third-period deficit and Dan Vladar stopped Jordan Eberle's penalty shot, but a too-many-men call in OT and Bobby McMann's Round 5 shootout winner left the Flyers 0-5-3. McMann scored in regulation, too.

Jets 5, Wild 2. Mark Scheifele had a goal and two assists, Cole Perfetti scored twice and Stuart Skinner won in net for a Winnipeg team that's 4-1-1 despite the Hellebuyck standoff. Kirill Kaprizov scored both Minnesota goals.

Golden Knights 5, Predators 2. Tomas Hertl, Jack Eichel, William Karlsson, Trevor Connelly and Brett Howden scored, and Adin Hill stopped a Jack Drury penalty shot. Adam Edstrom's shorthanded goal was the highlight for Nashville.

Mammoth 5, Maple Leafs 4. Utah built a 5-2 lead behind Daniil But, Vincent Trocheck, Mikhail Sergachev (shorthanded), Dylan Guenther and MacKenzie Weegar, then survived Toronto's late charge — including a final 1:46 killed off at 6-on-4. Auston Matthews and John Tavares had a goal and an assist each; rookie Gavin McKenna scored too.

Flames 4, Ducks 2. Calgary's 0-5 start is over. Martin Pospíšil broke a 2-2 tie with 4:22 left, Aydar Suniev scored in his second straight game, and Dustin Wolf made 23 saves. Ducks prospect Roger McQueen made his NHL debut.

By the Numbers

  • 112 — goals on the night by our count (including shootout deciders), more than any of the first three Frenzies and second only to the all-time single-day mark of 114.

  • 9 — road teams that won.

  • 4 — games past regulation (two overtimes, two shootouts).

  • 3 — players with first NHL goals or milestone firsts worth circling: Stenberg, Jiříček, and Brady Tkachuk's first as a Panther (times three).

  • 1 — brother-assisted hat tricks in NHL history before last night: zero. Now it's one.

Up Next

Colorado and Dallas run it back Wednesday in Denver on TBS. And mark your calendar for April: the NHL closes the regular season with another 16-game night.
