Why Hockey Is Booming in America Right Now

Between an Olympic gold medal and record-breaking participation numbers, 2026 has been a landmark year for hockey in the United States — and the momentum shows no signs of slowing down.

Gold in Milan-Cortina

Team USA delivered a moment reminiscent of the 1980 'Miracle on Ice' when both the men's and women's national teams won gold at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, each defeating Canada 2-1 in overtime. For a sport still chasing the mainstream attention of football, basketball, and baseball, it was a signature moment watched by a national audience.

Record Participation From the Ground Up

The Olympic run capped years of steady growth. USA Hockey membership has climbed to record highs, with well over 650,000 registered players, coaches, and officials nationwide. Youth registration has hit an all-time high for three years running, and the 8-and-under age group — the pipeline for the sport's future — has set participation records in each of those years.

Growth Beyond the Traditional Markets

What makes this growth notable is where it's happening. Nontraditional hockey markets like Florida, Utah, Texas, Arizona, and California are seeing some of the fastest gains in the country, often fueled by NHL success and expansion in those regions. Girls' and women's hockey has been one of the brightest spots of all, growing 39% over the past decade.

A Sport on the Rise

With Olympic gold renewing national interest, a growing rink infrastructure, and youth numbers at all-time highs, American hockey is in the middle of a genuine boom — one built on both elite success and grassroots growth.
